5 tips to stop snacking
Snacking ruins more diets than anything else.
This one thing ruins most diets… Snacking.
Most snacking is not physical hunger.
It’s habit, tiredness, emotional avoidance, boredom, your environment or lack of structure.
I’ve been a fat loss coach for over a decade.
Snacking ruins more diets than anything else. Most of my clients have great meals but ruin it by snacking/grazing/ mindlessly eating in-between.
5 tips to stop snacking:
I saved the best & most actionable tip for last…
Improve your sleep.
One of my clients found the best thing she did for her fat loss was stop scrolling on her phone at night. She slept better, managed hunger and cravings better, had more energy and made better choices.
Stop avoiding how you feel.
One of the most common reasons we eat is to numb emotion - stress, boredom, heartache. Find a better coping strategy for whatever it is you’re avoiding. (Easier said than done but this isn’t the time or place)
Environment
Most people snack mindlessly because it’s there. If it wasn’t or if there was friction e.g. even just the need to go intro the cupboard they wouldn’t. Look at your environment - how can you make the choice you want to make the easiest option.
Lack of structure
Plan your meals and snacks ahead - be intentional with how you eat. You have a goal. It won’t happen by accident.
Break the habit
For most people snacking has simply become habitual. This is often the hardest one to overcome.
Here’s how I do it with clients…
Commit to 7 days.
No snacking until you’ve consumed at least 5 fruit and veg portions.
You will find you snack less, eat more fruit and veg and feel more satiated without feeling restricted.
Notice here the rule is not simply no snacking - that rarely works well. The rule is no snacking until you’ve consumed 5 fruit and veg portions. By this point even if you do snack you’re less likely to overeat and more likely to choose healthier options.
Give it a try and let me know how you get on :)
