One of the most common symptoms of menopause is a shift in fat distribution.
When the ration of estrogen to testosterone changes women tend to experience a shift in where they store fat.
Typically women store more fat peripherally - especially around thighs and bum area.
Many women notice that during peri- menopause this shifts towards central fat storage. Whether this bothers you or not from an appearance perspective is individual but there are some health implications from this shift in fat storage.
Central.. or more accurately visceral fat storage is correlated to increased health complications primarily an increase in cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer.
Below you can see the difference between subcutaneous fat (a relatively safe place to store excess energy) and Visceral fat that accumulates around organs and causes metabolic problems.
A very crude way to assess whether you have predominantly subcutaneous or visceral fat is how hard your stomach is. A hard (beer belly appearance) stomach indicates more visceral fat as this is under the abdominal muscles. A softer feel to stomach fat indicates more subcutaneous fat.
In order to stay fit, healthy and reduce risk of disease as you age you need to keep visceral fat storage to a minimum.

It’s still diet and exercise.
And unfortunately you still can’t choose where you lose fat from but there is evidence to support the inclusion of exercise to aid visceral fat reduction.
in other words you will lose more visceral fat if you include exercise in your fat loss plan not just calorie restriction. Everyone should be doing this anyway but it’s good to have an extra nudge!
By far the hardest part of this is changing behaviours when you are struggling with peri menopausal symptoms that make it harder to lose fat - lack of sleep, lower mood, increased hunger, lower energy and motivation to name but a few.
