A list of the internet’s worst advice for peri-menopausal women:
❌Don’t do HIIT it will spike cortisol.
✅HIIT is one of the best things you can do to improve your health. All exercise increases cortisol. This is meant to happen.
❌Avoid phytoestrogens
✅Foods high in phytoestrogens are actively good for peri-post menopausal women.
❌Consume 15g protein pre workout
✅Protein timing is less important than many will have you believe. Getting in at least 20g at some point around your workout would be a better aim.
❌Avoid cortisol at all costs.
✅Cortisol is not bad. Acute increases in cortisol are important for life. Chronically elevated cortisol is something you want to avoid but you wouldn’t do this by avoiding exercise - in fact exercise has been shown to help manage stress.
❌You need to reset your metabolism
✅You can’t magically reset your metabolism. And your metabolism doesn’t noticeably slow with age until about 60. The reduction is then closely linked to reduced movement and muscle mass.
❌Your body can no longer tolerate carbohydrate because you’re insulin resistant
✅Insulin resistance is not an on/off switch. You are not suddenly unable to process carbs because you’re peri menopausal. You may experience a reduction in insulin sensitivity but the best thing you can do for this is to stay lean, avoid long periods of time being inactive and resistance train (muscle is the biggest site of glucose disposal)
My aim is to stop the spread of miss information around menopause and empower women to take action.
