The reason so many great coaches seem to contradict each other is that they are talking to different people.
5 examples of confusing advice explained:
You need to be in a surplus to build muscle
True if you are an experienced lifter & are already lean and don’t have fat to lose
False if you are new to resistance training and have excess fat to lose (you can absolutely lose fat & build muscle simultaneously)
You need to track calories.
True if.. never, you never NEED to track calories but for some people it’s a really useful tool.
Calories matter whether you count them or not.
You should always eat breakfast
Good advice if.. you’re struggling with binge eating caused by over restriction
False if you prefer not to eat breakfast and it has no negative impact for you.
You have to go to the gym to build muscle
True if you’re a body builder looking to optimise hypertrophy & it would be almost impossible or at least very impractical to achieve progressive overload at home.
False if you’re new to exercise and body weight workouts are enough to simulate muscle growth.
You should never train fasted
True if you’re recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea
False if you like training fasted & it fits with your life.
You should take *insert supplement*
True if you’re deficient in this and can’t get enough of it from your diet
False if you are already getting in enough from your diet or you could by improving your diet.
I could go on but you get the gist..
Almost all advice can be good or bad depending on who is listening. This is why it may seem confusing.
This is also why it’s important to get advice specific to you, your goals, your situation, your starting point & your preferences rather than following generic advice that may not be helpful.
