Being happy & being in shape often correlate.
But it’s important to understand why…
I was in shape here because I felt good …I didn’t feel good because I was in shape.
The direction of causality is important.
When it rains you’ll see a lot of umbrellas… But umbrellas don’t cause the rain.
The reason being happy & being in shape often correlate is that it’s way easier to take care of yourself, be motivated to exercise & to eat well when you’re happy!
The false attribution of happiness happens A LOT and it’s really important to point out.
Many of my clients remember being X age and feeling their happiest…
They look back and think oh I weighed X then so to feel my best now my goal should be to weigh X… as if your weight is the primary thing that determines happiness.
In reality you felt great then because you likely had half the life stress and demands on your time.
Maybe it was before you had kids, a career, a partner - all HUGE positives but all quite stressful too. (& specifically to my clients - you weren’t going through the menopause either!)
Weighing X weight isn’t going to make you happier.
But finding ways to make yourself happier will often result in losing weight as it’s far easier to improve habits when you feel good & mood is higher.
Take home: Don’t fall for the false attribution of happiness.
Just like umbrellas don’t cause the rain.
Fat loss doesn’t make you happier.
Focus on the things that make you feel good. The rest will follow.
